Well I never thought I’d be featuring a mix that starts with Sunny & The Sunliners, but here we are with Coco Maria, who I seem to have fallen in love with.
I’ve listened to this mix so many times, it is just perfect music to start the day, and I guess it was very early at Gala, the festival in Peckham of which I’m quite curious about.
Some tracks by Aretha Franklin, others by more obscure artists – some Brazilian funk by the likes of Dom Un Romao – it is a real mix of slower, more languid sounds.
Coco Maria seems to be someone obsessed with music discovery, her Instagram features videos of her playing in all kinds of venues, including deep into South America – Coco Maria being Mexican herself, deep into where some of the rarer grooves might be found. Musically if you think Gilles Peterson then you aren’t far away, but very much Coco Maria is Coco Maria.
Also her website is a delight – actually quite a funky design instead of the monotony of 2020’s internet, and is well worth a little gander, along with a listen to her NTS radio shows.
The mix continues with an emphasis on what I assume are Brazilian sounds – I’d be lying if I pretended to know what genres the music is, so I’ll go with the dispiriting “world music” tag.
Though there’s definitely some samba, a bit of disco, some funk too – this is just quite a delightful world that Coco Maria is espousing.
Enjoyment rating of 8.21.
